Gunnersbury awarded Windrush Day Grant

We are thrilled to have been awarded funding from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) from its Windrush Day Grant Scheme 2023.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the MV Empire Windrush in the United Kingdom, when the first passengers disembarked at Tilbury Docks, and this year’s Windrush Day Grant Scheme will support groups to commemorate, celebrate and educate people about the contribution of the Windrush generation and their descendants across communities in our country.

At Gunnersbury the funding will support our upcoming exhibition Jigsaw Heritage, which will explore Jaixia Blue’s multimedia textile collection based on her relationship with her grandmother who is battling with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Through her work, she reflects on the story of her grandmother’s journey aged 21, from Savanna-la-mar, Jamaica to Paddington, London toward the end of the Windrush period. Drawing on her grandmother’s handwritten musings and fragmented memories, the artist embarked on her own journey of piecing together the jigsaw puzzle of her dual British and Caribbean heritage.

We will also be holding an evening of interactive storytelling through textile art and live performance to mark Windrush Day.
