It's Our 100th Birthday!

Today (21/05/26) marks exactly 100 years since the official opening of the park to the public. To celebrate this very special milestone, Gunnersbury staff, volunteers, Board Members... and four-legged friend Obi gathered beside the Orangery to mark the occasion with a suitably iconic Colin the Caterpillar cake.

We were incredibly fortunate with the weather, as the park was bathed in sunshine for much of the day, with temperatures reaching 20 degrees. It felt especially fitting that, a century on from the original opening celebrations, the park once again welcomed people together under bright skies to celebrate this important moment in its history.

Other celebrations taking place this month to mark the centenary include our 100th Birthday Party on 25 May 2026, a special event bringing together visitors, families, and the local community to celebrate a century of Gunnersbury as a public park. Alongside this, our 'Gunnersbury Unlocked: From Private Grounds to Public Park' exhibition offers a deeper exploration of the site’s rich and layered history, following its journey from a private estate to a much loved public green space.

Visitors can also enjoy our Behind Gunnersbury blog series, including our 100th Birthday edition 'How to Make a Public Park', written by our fantastic Archives volunteer Pamela, which delves into the people, planning, and practicalities behind the park’s creation.

Together, these events and stories provide a fitting tribute to 100 years of Gunnersbury as a place of heritage, community, and celebration and look ahead to its continued role at the heart of local life.
