Thousands celebrate our 100th Birthday in Record Breaking Community Event

More than 3,000 visitors gathered in the sunshine to celebrate the 100th birthday of Gunnersbury Park at a community birthday party this weekend.

With temperatures reaching 34.8 degrees, the park came alive with live music, dance workshops, traditional games, crafts, guided tours, community stalls and a giant community picnic blanket, creating a joyful day of celebration for visitors of all ages.

The event showcased the very best of Gunnersbury’s community spirit, bringing together local residents, artists, volunteers, charities, performers and businesses to celebrate the park’s centenary year.

Highlights from the day included swing dance workshops featuring Charleston, Black Bottom and Lindy Hop routines, performances from local musicians including Jasper Squire, Green Ribbon Club and Orchard Jazz Quartet, as well as special guided tours of the Park and Museum.

Visitors could also explore a community market featuring more than 30 local makers and organisations, alongside Gunnersbury Museum's archive displays showcasing historic photographs and documents from the park's past.

One of the centrepieces of the event was the giant Community Picnic Blanket, made up of more than 400 individually decorated patchwork squares created by volunteers, community groups, local students and members of the public.

Local MP, Rupa Huq, also attended the celebrations and delivered a special thank you speech recognising the importance of Gunnersbury to the local community over the past century.

We would also like to extend our thanks to the community stalls and makers who generously donated prizes to the birthday raffle, including Lynne Moulding, Crochet Bouquet, Middlesex Pride, Mahaba Café, Bonwoire, Ajubi’s Afrimart, Craft Room, Speak Out in Hounslow, Lucky Number 5, Artsi Glass, Charlotte Berridge and Kaiviti Sunshine.

We were so happy to see so many people celebrate our 100th birthday with us. We had our busiest ever day in the Museum and scores more enjoying the park, connecting with friends, family and neighbours. It was wonderful to see children, community groups and volunteers coming to see their individual square on our giant community picnic blanket, which stretched to over 50m!
