Piggies in the Park Project Updates

We would like to welcome Teddy Swine and Dolly Parton to our Piggies in the Park conservation grazing project. They joined the Gunnersbury team in February this year.

Both Teddy and Dolly are Juliana pigs. Juliana pigs are a small, colourful spotted domestic pig breed often referred to as a "miniature painted pig or micro pigs". They were created through the selective crossbreeding of various smaller-sized pig breeds, and some accounts note they were crossed with the Kune-Kune pig which are one of the few true breeds of small pigs.

The Juliana pig bred originated in Europe, specifically the Netherlands, during the late 20th century.  The aim of creating a small, friendly pig that would be suitable for companionship which gained popularity in the early 2000s, particularly in the United States, where they became a favoured choice for pet owners.

Juliana pigs were named after the Dutch Queen Juliana, who was known for her affinity for animals.  The breed’s small size and playful demeanour quickly turned into a popular choice in homes across the globe. Today, they are recognised for their unique physical traits and affectional personalities.

Teddy and Dolly have been acclimating to college life and been undergoing a gentle training program to prepare them for their public debut and the busy work they have ahead of them, here in Gunnersbury Park. Teddy and Dolly are brother and sister and are about 4 years. Teddy is a sociable soul who is happy to say hello. Dolly values her personal space and beauty sleep. So don’t be offended when she ignores you!
